(ESOL and GED, and Transitions)
Stoughton Adult Basic Ed
English for Speakers of Other Languages

The Stoughton Adult Basic Education Program addresses the need for Stoughton area adults to gain English proficiency. Based on individual student needs, our instructors tailor lessons to maximize opportunities for students to attain their goals.
  • All classes are offered free of charge to residents with limited English proficiency.
  • Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Stoughton High School , 232 Pearl Street , Stoughton , MA 02302 .
  • We currently offer Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels of ESOL.
  • Topics include reading, writing, grammar, American culture, conversation, pronunciation, and computers.
  • Classes run for 34 weeks from September to June, following the Stoughton Public Schools calendar.

To register, please attend one of our next Intake/Assessment Dates:

  • Tuesday, October 5, 2010 - 5:30 p,m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, December 7, 2010 - 5:30 p,m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, February 15, 2011 - 5:30 p,m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, April 26, 2011 - 5:30 p,m. – 7:00 p.m.

Registration is held at Stoughton High School, 232 Pearl Street, Stoughton , MA 02302.

Interested students will complete an application and take the English Placement Assessment. If there are no current class openings, applicants will be placed on our wait list in the order in which they have registered. Students are enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis as openings become available in the appropriate class level.

The Stoughton Adult Basic Education Program is a collaborative partnership among Massasoit Community College, Stoughton Public Schools, and the Town of Stoughton, funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Education.

College Transitions Program

The Transitions Program is held at the Brockton Campus and is designed to provide individual support to help students make the transition to college-level work during their first year.

Through the College Experience course, students become familiar with the college's resources and develop the skills necessary to succeed at the college level. In addition the Transitions Program provides free preparatory classes in Reading , Basic Math, Writing and Computers.

Students enrolled in the Transitions Program will receive:

  • 3-Credit College Experience Class ~ Free
  • Up to 3 Developmental Reading, Writing, and/or Math courses ~ Free
  • Introductory Computers- (worth three college credits) ~ Free
  • Individualized Academic Counseling

  • You must have been enrolled in a community-based Massachusetts Department of Education funded Adult Basic Education,
    GED, or ESOL program within the past 10 years
  • Have a Social Security Number and photo ID
  • Must be a Massachusetts resident
  • Are an American citizen or Have a permanent residency status~ ("Green Card")
  • Have a GED or Are an ESOL student with a high school diploma from your native country that can be certified by the Center for Educational Documentation
  • Can demonstrate the ability to read at a college level as determined by a standardized assessment (TABE).
The Massasoit Community College Transitions Program is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Education as a transition-to-college experience for students who were formerly participants in MA DOE funded Adult Basic Education Programs.

Transitional ESL Class (College Preparation Course)
This 48-hour non-credit course is designed to address existing educational gaps between students' Adult Basic Education ESL education and college-level ESL courses.
The course focuses on reading, writing, and speaking, with pronunciation exercises, listening, and grammar. Courses are offered on a rotating basis during the day and evening. Locations also vary from the Brockton and Canton campuses to off-campus locations.
To register for the class, students must first take the ESL assessment to determine which level of ESL best suits their needs. Assessments are offered through the ESL Coordinator's Office.

The class costs about $157. Texts cost approximately $50-70. When the college receives a grant, classes are offered free.
GED Review

pencil imageThis 48 hour course is designed to prepare students for the GED Test. Instructional emphasis is on English language and reading skills, as well as mathematics and use of the GED test-specific calculator. The course is fast review, not designed to address needs for in-depth ESOL or ABE instruction. During the last weeks of the course, you will take an official GED Practice Test to help determine your readiness to take the actual GED Test.

The GED Review Class is offered two to three times per semester, and costs $147. The GED textbook is an additional $25. For more information on GED Review see a full course description and pre-assessment dates on this website under non-credit Community Education courses.

GED Testing Center
Massasoit Community College is an official GED Testing site. When students are prepared to take the GED Test, they can register by calling 508-588-9100 x1994.
