Medical Assisting

Program Requirements | Placement | Accreditation

Massasoit Community College in Canton, MA, offers quality training in Medical Assistant, a one-year (full time) Certificate Program. Graduates are eligible to participate in the National Certified Medical Assistant Examination.

Medical assistants perform administrative and clinical tasks. The duties vary depending on office location, size and specialty. Administrative duties performed include answering telephones, greeting patients, scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, and completing insurance forms.

Clinical duties include obtaining medical histories from patients, recording vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, and assisting the physician during the examination.

Medical assistants also collect and prepare laboratory specimens, sterilize instruments, perform venipunctures and EKG's. Medical assistants who work for specialists will have additional duties.

Medical assisting is expected to be one of the fastest growing occupations through the year 2016.

At Massasoit, formal instruction is integrated with invaluable field experience. A special feature of the program is an eight-week required Clinical Internship in a physician's office, health care agency or hospital. Such affiliation frequently leads to employment opportunities.

Some of the facilities participating in the clinical internship program are: Pediatric Associates, Dedham Medical Associates-Dedham/ Norwood, Atrius Women's Health Center, Miray Medical, South Shore Medical Center-Norwell/ Kingston, Brockton Neighborhood Health Center

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
1. Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate.
2. Students are also recommended to complete their English, Reading, and Math assessment testing as soon as possible. This will allow them to complete any tutorial courses over the summer prior to beginning the Medical Assistant curriculum. Failure to complete these English, Reading, and Math prerequisites will not permit the student to complete the fulltime program in nine months, therefore delaying graduation and the AAMA examination.

C.O.R.I. (Criminal Offender Record Information) checks will be done on all those admitted.
Unsatisfactory C.O.R.I. status will prohibit participation in clinical experience. Therefore, program requirements cannot be completed.
