In the summer of 2007 the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Executive Office of Labor & Workforce Development formally recognized the critical need to support the competitive growth of the Massachusetts Marine Trades industry. Massasoit Community College in partnership with the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association (MMTA), Bristol Community College and MY TURN, INC. received a grant to increase the number of skilled workers, especially marine technicians, through customized training. The grant focuses on introducing youth, job seekers, returning vets, and incumbent workers to sustainable wage jobs and career ladders. As part of this grant an introductory course, Marine Trades Basic Certificate, was developed by Massasoit Community College in collaboration with MMTA. A similar course, Marine Trades Introduction, was developed by Bristol Community College.
Although not free, higher-level Marine Technician training is available through Massasoit’s 350-hour Marine Technician Certificate Program and through Bristol Community College’s Marine Technology series. During the third year of the grant, advanced training courses will be developed for Marine Technicians and incumbent workers.
